DEFINITIONS OF BASIC ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

BASIC ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

1. RESISTOR

  • A passive electronic component, manufactured with a specified amount of resistance.
  • It is mainly used to control the flow of current.
  • It allows desired amount of voltage in electronic or electrical circuits.
  • Its unit is ohms.

2. INDUCTOR

  • A passive electronic component, manufactured with a specified amount of inductance.
  • When electricity is passed, the inductor stores energy in a magnetic field and induces the voltage.
  • It is mainly used for tuning and filtering circuits.
  • Its unit is Henry(H).

3. CAPACITOR

  • A passive electronic component, manufactured with a specified amount of capacitance.
  • It will charge or store energy in an electric field.
  • It blocks dc current and allows ac current.
  • Its unit is Farad(F).

4. TRANSISTOR

  • A semiconductor component, used for amplification.
  • It regulates the current and voltage flow in a circuit.
  • It has three terminals for connection with external circuits.
  • It acts as a switch for electrical and electronic signals.

5. DIODE

  • An electronic component, consisting of two terminals.
  • Diode is used to convert ac voltage to dc voltage i.e., rectification.
  • It allows current in one direction while it blocks current in other direction.
  • The diodes are used in Power supplies.

6. INTEGRATED CIRCUITS (IC'S)

  • It is just a packaged electronic circuit.
  • They are made up of semiconductor material normally silicon.
  • There are thousands of resistors, capacitors and transistors  fabricated on a tiny single chip of silicon.
  • IC's are normally used in all electronic equipments like computers, mobile phones etc.
